Feature On: Le Youth

It’s all about supporting new producers…This guy is worth taking note of…Le Youth, Wes James, is a producer/DJ from Los Angeles, CA. Wes grew up playing in various bands but always had an itch to create dance music and through this itch Le Youth was born. Even though he has only been producing for about a year his track ‘Fever’ is planned for general release on Group Hug Records next month. Someone to keep an eye on in the future.

Le Youth – End Of Summer

Genre: House

About The Track: It’s all about those summer vibes, smooth track with a disco feel to it.

Le Youth: “When I produce tracks I try to imagine how it will sound on the dance floor. If I can't imagine people dancing to it, I usually throw the track away. This one was different. It had a small element of dance-ability but the overwhelming "End Of Summer" vibe is what carried it for me, and prevented it from ending up in the trash bin.”

FUNK ME ITS THURSDAY

DJ Center - Center’s Groove – Captain Planet Remix

Release Date: Out Now
Label: Bastard Jazz
Genre: Funk

About The Track: Just in time for summer, long-standing Brooklyn label Bastard Jazz Recordings is proud to bring you a little slice of sunshine from New York City's DJ Center. “Center's Groove”, a natural fit on Bastard Jazz, was taken from DJ Center's critically acclaimed debut album, Everything in Time LP, and was a standout favorite for the likes of the Huffingtonpost, Okayplayer.com, Bobbito, DJ Vadim and Nickodemus and received heavy rotation on KCRW in Los Angeles.

The original track itself is a beautiful midtempo piece of bossa-hop, complete soaring horns and easy tropical guitar vibes - perfect for getting those feet moving as the sun goes down over the BBQ grill. Bastard Jazz artist Captain Planet pulls “Center's Groove” towards the dancefloor even more with boomin' drums, samba whistles & cuicas, dirty synth bass, and funky Rhodes work that could have come straight from Bob James himself.

D-Funk/Philly Blunt – Let It Ride Ep
A freebee on this release: Philly Blunt – Funky Music

Release Date: 2011.08.22
Label: Grits N Gravy
Catalog# GNG004
Genre: Funk

About The EP: Following on from their previous collaboration, "Time To Move", Aussie breaks mangler D-Funk and Grits N Gravy label boss Philly Blunt reunite for "Let It Ride", a low-slung '80s funk-meets-soulful rap hybrid that smashes in hard with a slinky electro bassline and a swirling set of disco strings. Two new solo D-Funk beats also see the light of day - the equally head-nodding thrills of "Turn That Upside Down" and the Clash-sampling "Don't Ever Stop" - while Philly Blunt's excellent blues 'n' breaks-fest "Funky Music" also gets a well-earned release.

Label: Bombastic Jam

About The Artist: This fresh name stands for 3 peeps who recently have appeared in the international scene, yet their local experiences go back further much behind. Vida G., Stefan and Clairvo, each of them having their own weekly club-night residencies in their hometown, Budapest, had been teasing the crowd for more than a decade now.

Coming from the crew of one of the local breakbeat heroes called AllNightBreakz, DJ Vida G. has been testing his funky influenced party-breaks and disco tracks for ages on venues such as Cinetrip, Sziget Fesztival, Volt Fesztival and also at internationally well known clubs like Corvintet
ő, Merlin Budapest or Instant where he was sharing the booth with acts like Herbaliser, Hybrid, Freeland, Krafty Kuts, A-Skillz, Pendulum, Kraak N Smaak or The Freestylers among many others. Besides playing out his tunes weekly and checking peeople’s reactions, he has also gained the knowledge of producing by making remixes for hungarian stars like Irie Maffia or Anima Sound System.

The threesome, separately having releases under their belts on labels such as Resense, Timewarp Music, V.I.M. Records and Breakbeat Paradise Recordings, with remixes on BigM Productions and Breaks.sk, have united now to step into the wolrd of ghetto-funk and funky-breakz.

Neon Steve – Movin On (recommend!!!)

About The Track: What can I say…this tune is awesome, dirty groove & great vocals….all in all a slick and funky production.

Release Date: 2011.09.12
Label: Punchout! Recordings
Catalog# HISCORE 800
Genre: Funk

About The Artist: Whether it be his fresh face, fresh beats or fresh attire, it's hard not to notice Neon Steve. Hailing from Victoria BC on Vancouver Island, Steve is quickly making his mark as one of the West Coast's top DJ's/Producers.

At the ripe age of 22, Steve's list of accomplishments has already grown to be quite impressive. Whether it be his infectious live act (that recently seen him take 1st place in the 2010 Hush DJ Challenge), or his ability of being able to craft ass-shaking tunes in the studio, it's no surprise he's had the opportunity to share the stage with some of the worlds top acts (artists such as A.Skillz, Rusko, Krafty Kuts, Boy 8 Bit, Nick Thayer, Parker, Pimpsoul, The Freestylers, MSTRKRFT, Freq Nasty, Fort Knox Five, Deekline, Farace, Mat the Alien, Busta, Stickybuds, J-Roc, and Ed 209 to name a few).

When Steve jumps behind the decks you can expect a high energy blend of everything from Disco to Drum and Bass. Matched with some precise cuts and clever personal edits a plenty, Steve has certainly developed his own brand of party rockin'. 2010 proved to be a successful year for Steve with a touring schedule that took him all around British Columbia and Alberta. He played some major festivals like Soundwave, VEMF, and Rifflandia, as well as some massive Club night's.

His production credits thus far boast remixes for Jpod's label (Swing Set Sounds), and Bass Bong records. On more than one occasion, a number of Steve's bootlegs quickly hit the top of the Hype Machine and Soundcloud charts - And this kid is only warming up. Off to a running start in 2011, Steve has already got a vinyl release on the notoriously popular Bombstrikes Label (UK), a release on Canada's own Punchout! label, also with a remix for Funk Weapons in the works. With support from the likes of Featurecast, Pimpsoul, Parker, Stickybuds, Busta, Slynk, etc, etc....

It's safe to say the future is indeed very bright for this young talent.. And they don't call him Neon Steve for nothing.

Strictly this is known as breakbeat but I feel it crosses enough over into the funk field to deem worthy of a post…plus it’s a banger!

JiggyJoe – Da Trumpets

DOWNLOAD NOW

About The Track: New to Breakbeat Paradise Recordings, German producer Sascha Peterson aka JiggyJoe brings a hefty amount of dancehall flow, nu-skool funk and electro-tech heaviness to these four tracks. "Da Trumpets" uses a trick used by dancehall freaks from Basement Jaxx to Dillon Francis - namely the slowly pitch-rising vocal, layered over a confident and punchy midtempo bass beat.

Label: Breakbeat Paradise Recordings

THIS WEEKS HOUSE SELECTION

Teeth – Flowers (Russ Chimes Vocal Mix)

About The Track: A remix by London producers, Teeth, and their new single 'Flowers, this release has summer vibe written all over it. The track itself has a deep nature to it, well suited to the vocals, and an epic euphoric feel as it progresses.

Release Date: 2011.09.04
Label: Moshi Moshi Records
Catalog# Moshi131
Genre: House
BPM: 128
Key: D#Major

About The Artist: In a sea of postmodern hipsters come bedroom producers on a sparkling lilo of talent. Russ Chimes is a man from the UK who knows what’s in the party. Sounding a bit like something halfway between a Sega game and an airbrushed mural of Wayfarer’d flamingos, Russ Chimes’ tunes may at times elicit some degree of nostalgia, although the inherent quality definitely proves he’s more about about doing what feels good rather than the irony. (in a manner perhaps akin to funk fanatics Chromeo).

Russ (a 25 year old producer from London) also heads up the British wing of French west coast retro-futuristic collective Valerie, and blends some seriously catchy 80’s synth hooks with some really impressive layering and lush composition, all topped with a groove that can keep you dancing until the sun comes up over the beach front palm trees. Michael & Mattis – Holy Moly (Xinobi Remix)

About The Track: A deep remix of a Michael & Mattis release. Good use of synths and a nice progressive nature throughout.

Release Date: 2011.09.06
Label: Nurvous Records
Catalog# NE22385
Genre: House
BPM: 126
Key: D# Minor

About The Artist: Xinobi has in the past few years, developed his own versatile, honest sound. Tracks like BMX, who jump-started his musical career, bring in the funky-house that we now associate with him, although he also dabbles in Disco, Techno and Electro. His tracks are clearly from the present day but cognizant of the good bits of the past. Visually, one might say his tracks are inspired by palm-trees, the ocean, and great sunsets. They remind us of how awesome the soundtracks of our favorite movies (the comedies, the ones from the 80s, or the good old italian movies from the 60s and 70s) can really be. Thats why you can clearly hear some of these decades in the sound of Xinobi. The sensitivity of the 60s, the disco and psychedelics of the 70s, the breakdance from the 80s, the french and american 90s house and techno music, and the mash-ups of today.

With his buddy Moullinex, he conceived and created the label and collective Discotexas, now with cult status and still ascending in popularity - being considered one of the biggest influences in the emerging electronic scene. Xinobi too got a cult status through tracks like "Day Off", envied and remixed by many other producers.

Recently, and a result of his many trips around the world, he's surprised the world with his collaboration with Joshua Jakq in the love song "The Best of Me", clearly one of his finest works and one that shows his true talents as a musician and composer. On top of all this, Xinobi also pulls the stunt of being a tremendously versatile DJ, being able to move the full floor and please both sides of the very same coin.

About the Artist: The multi-talented George Fotiadis, aka Basement Freaks, has been successfully churning out track after funky track for over ten years now with releases on labels such as Jalapeno, Goodgroove and Wack. His music has a great live sound to it which is quite probably down to the fact that he can play the guitar, bass and drums.

After more than 10 successful vinyl releases, 2 full albums and DJ performances in almost all European countries the Basement Freaks sound gets in the map of the global underground Funky Breakbeat scene.

2010 was a breakthrough year for George”s musical career. First up was an album titled “Debut” as Smokey Bandits, which was a big hit in his native Greece and received plaudits around the world. Dedicated by George to his late father it was a collaboration with Dimitris Nassios and allowed George to hone his already tight production skills. 2010 also brought three vinyl releases as Basement Freaks on Jalapeno & Breakbeat Paradise Records. These releases received strong reviews in MixMag & I-DJ Mag and got massive support
from the biggest names in the Funky scene worldwide as well as these physical releases the hardest working man in funk released 4 digital ep’s on his own Bombastic Jam label.

That would be enough for most people but in 2010 George also released 15 remixes for labels like Jalapeno / ESL / Air Recordings /The Pooty Club and of course Bombastic Jam. This year Basement Freaks has performed in various venues around Europe with the highlight being the gig at the legendary Fabric Club in London on 26 of March!

In 2010 The Basement Freaks project with the 2 vocalists Georges Perin & Jazzmin performed live for the first time as a soundsystem at Reworks Festival the 17th of September and during the summer of 2010 finished the recordings and production of their album “Something Freaky“ which will be released on 31 Jan 2011 by Jalapeno Records. Something Freaky made a huge impression on Nu Skool Breaks Pioneer Rennie Pilgrem who declared it his secret weapon in I-DJ mag as well as giving it a storming review, played it during a guest mix on Radio 1 and bigged up the band in his interview for Knowledge Magazine!

Feature on: Abstract Source

Abstract Source (Jules Dickens) is a producer definitely worth looking out for, I stumbled across his work the other day and instantly I was impressed, to say the least. It is the use of analogue synths and live percussion in many of his tunes that give an edge and crispness to his production. This along with the progressive, story-telling nature of much of his work adds character and depth to his music. His music has been predominately produced in the last year, however it is worthy of a post and definitely worth looking out for more releases in the future.

About The Artist: Covering many bases from Disco to Detroit Techno, Jules Dickens (aka Abstract Source) continues to push the boundaries of Electronic Music while maintaining an old school approach to production. Combining vintage drum machines, analogue synths and state of the art plug-ins fired through a 5 foot analogue rack (courtesy of mix wizard - Wes Maebe). A genuine passion for travel and music has taken Jules all over the world on both a professional and personal basis, relocating to Kuala Lumpur in 2003 and eventually setting up DJ/Producer courses at SAE (School of Audio Engineering).

Jules currently works in London as a production tutor and producer focusing on recording and producing live musicians, which has helped add an organic angle to his productions. Abstract Source can often be found behind the decks at a number of London clubs, including Egg, Jamm, Public Life, Ginglik, Horse & Groom and Dalston Superstore. Latest projects involve setting up the Abstract Source DJ/Producer Academy, collaborations with legendary DJ Colin Dale as well as working with soul singer Elliot Chapman on the Deep Vocal House Project - Warm Winters - available for preview at: Warm Winters

Catalog# GFPD03
Genre: Ghetto Funk

About The Track: The newest crew member of the ghetto funk crew, Bobby, is back with another big free EP for you lucky people, the last EP is getting plays by most of the crew and many other headline DJ’s. This time the EP is a public download, we are pressing some Bobby C’s tracks soon on vinyl so this will be the last freebie EP from him, also look out for a regular video feature from Bobby and friends on the blog soon.

About The Artist: It’s not everyday a producer/DJ gets blogged by one of their favorite directors as is the case with Bobby C Sound TV who was recently blogged and called brilliant by Edgar Wright, director of such cult movies as Shaun Of The Dead, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World and Hot Fuzz. Bobby C Sound TV is one Bobby Collins hailing from Denver, Colorado. He has been playing instruments from an early age and then a fateful show with Peanut Butter Wolf and Cut Chemist had him convinced on the spot that a pair of turntables were in his future. He has been DJing for the past 10 years and has played just about every venue in his home state including Red Rocks Amphitheater, The Fillmore as well as being the first artist in The First Bank Center (AEG’s new 8,000 seat flagship venue) for its VIP party. His love of cinema was combined with his 10 years of DJ experience to create a pastiche of pop-culture that is visually stimulating and danceable at the same time. His live mash up DJ approach was applied to create crowd rocking routines with some of the most memorable music videos, movie scenes and just about everything in between.

The past few years have seen him busier than ever on the production front with remixes and releases on 7 different labels worldwide and jumping on multiple top 10 lists for Juno Download and Beaport.
